Abstract

Early ejaculation during sex affects the sexual needs of both partners. Read the article below to learn more about it.

Premature Ejaculation and Steps to Treat It

The definition or explanation about premature ejaculation is a little bit complex. In simple term, it is a condition in which one sexual partner achieves orgasm earlier than the other. There is no standard time period to define premature ejaculation.

For example, a male may climax in 10 minutes but the female usually climaxes around five to six minutes approximately. If both are satisfied then it is not considered as premature ejaculation. If the male prolongs ejaculation up to 15 to 20 minutes but the female usually requires 30-35 minutes including foreplay for orgasm then in this case male can be considered for premature ejaculation. This may be premature or normal for the male. As such arbitrary definition exists in this matter.

Definition of Premature Ejaculation:

Let us see the definition by Society for Sexual Medicine.

  • Ejaculation that always or nearly always occurs before or within one minute of vaginal penetration from the first sexual experience is considered as lifelong premature ejaculation.
  • If there is clinically significant or bothersome reduction in latency time, often to about three minutes or less then it is considered premature ejaculation that is acquired during life time.

Causes of Premature Ejaculation:

The most important causes include,

  1. Inability to delay ejaculation on all or nearly all vaginal penetrations.
  2. Stress factors such as negative distress, bother, frustration or intimacy issues also play an important role.
  3. Performance anxiety about sex and other associated psychological problems like depression.
  4. Bad family history, previous relationship experience and bad memories of early sexual experiences like trauma.
  5. Asexual feelings that is in short staying neutral.
  6. Considering the effects of marital and non-marital sex and its associated social issues or taboos.
  7. Less involvement of female partner in intimacy or negative sexual response or feedback from the partner.
  8. Erectile dysfunction or inability to develop erect penis.
  9. Lack of knowledge about sex.
  10. Addiction of drugs, substance of abuse, alcohol, etc.

Investigations:

Some laboratory tests can be conducted such as serum testosterone levels (free and total), serum prolactin levels and psychological evaluation.

Steps to Manage Premature Ejaculation:

  • Relieve anxiety as much as possible.
  • Practice Master and Johnson technique (stop-start technique), in which stop sexual feel just before ejaculation. After some time start your stimulation again and repeat the procedure.
  • Also one can follow squeezing technique to pause ejaculation by placing the thumb and forefinger between the lower shaft of penis and tip of the penis. Squeeze it gently to subside the ejaculation. After this continue the act.
  • Give a second attempt as second attempts tend to be longer than first one.

These measures are effective in most patients. If you still feel the need then contact a sexologist. Conversely, one can get online doctor prescription for premature ejaculation since doctors prescribe certain medications.
