Skin Care and Use of Cosmetics in Acne Patients

What Is Skin?

Skin is the largest part of the human body; it is a type of sense organ present over the whole body, which is also known as the integumentary system. Skin is made up of minerals, water, protein, and fats. Skin is composed of nerves that help to feel the hot and cold sensations, hair follicles, and sweat glands. The anatomical structure of the skin is comprised of three layers called — epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis. The epidermis is the outermost layer of the skin that is seen and touched. It functions as a protective barrier and consists of a type of protein named keratin which forms the new skin cells, and melanin which provides color to the skin. The dermis is the second layer of skin, and it makes up around 90% thickness of the skin. The dermis layer is composed of collagen, which makes the skin stronger, and elastin which makes the skin flexible. It also consists of hair follicles, oil, and sweat glands. The hypodermis layer is the bottom layer of the skin, and it is also known as the fat layer. The bottom layer is composed of fatty tissues, which provide a cushioning effect to the bones and muscles of the body.

What Is the Importance of Skin Care?

Skincare is very important as the skin provides protection from heat and harmful substances, so taking care of the skin enhances the texture and makes the skin younger. There are several points to keep in mind that will help to protect the skin.

Protect the Skin from the Sun -

Sunlight can damage the skin as it has harmful rays which can penetrate the skin and may lead to the formation of wrinkles, dark spots, tanning, and other skin problems.

To prevent the damage caused by sunlight, it is important to apply sunscreen and avoid going out in strong sunlight. It is also recommended to wear protective clothing to protect the skin from the sun.

Quit Smoking -

Smoking can lead to many health-related problems and may cause adverse effects on the skin as well. Smoking tobacco releases harmful substances into the body, which may affect the skin by making it older and pigmented. It can damage the collagen and fibrin fibers present in the skin.

Stress Management -

Stress management is important. Stress can cause acne, and dark spots. It is therefore important to have a healthy state of mind.

Healthy Eating -

Eating healthy plays a vital role in preventing skin pigmentations; several superfoods are filled with all the nutritional values required for healthy skin. A healthy lifestyle with good food habits will increase the quality of the skin.

  • Fatty Fish - Fish is really good for healthy skin because it is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and zinc, which prevents skin pigmentation.

  • Seeds and Nuts - Eating seeds and nuts bring great value in nutritional supply to the body and skin, as they are loaded with vitamins, proteins, and minerals.

  • Avocados - Avocados help as an antioxidant for the skin that protects the skin from harsh sunlight damage.

  • Citrus Fruits - Citrus fruits are loaded with antioxidants and vitamin C, which are very important for healthy skin.

  • Sweet Potatoes and Carrots - They have antioxidant properties with provitamin A, vitamin C, and carotene, which prevent skin damage.

  • Drinking Water - The skin is a sensitive organ, and it is essential to keep it hydrated by drinking enough water.

What Is Acne?

Acne is a chronic problem that usually occurs in adolescence. The main cosmetic concern in acne patients is unappealing blemishes produced by active acne lesions and the formation of hyperpigmentation and scars. Acne arises in different forms, and the classification of acne depends on their severity. It could be whitehead, blackhead, small pimple, large solid lumps, or painful pus-filled lumps.

Which Cosmetic Should Be Used in Acne Patients?

In older days, it was suggested to acne patients that they should avoid cosmetics for fear of aggravating acne lesions. But, nowadays, due to the availability of water-based cosmetics and increased awareness, cosmetics can be offered to those who desire them for camouflage and other purposes. If an individual has oily skin, then he or she should be advised to adopt a healthy cleansing habit and should try to remove cosmetics as soon as possible.

  • Water-based cosmetics shouldbe preferred. Cream or paste formulations should be avoided.

  • Cosmetic usage should be restricted to necessary social engagement.

  • Facial cosmetics, astringents, and toners containing alcohol should not be used on a regular basis.

  • Non-comedogenic cosmetic products can cause acne aggravation since individual susceptibility varies.

  • Skin cleanser, frequent washing of the face with antibacterial soaps are required to keep oily skin clean and dry. Oil-based cleansing creams and lotions should be avoided.

  • Liquid foundations, which are oil-free or are of low oil contents and with a matte or semi-matte finish, should be used to cover blemishes, uneven facial colors, and scars.

  • The facial powder is a transparent or loose powder available in pink, yellow, or brown tones, which absorbs oil and can be used alone.

  • Moisturizers are recommended for combination skin, like if an individual has dryness in the outer zone of the face. Depending on the degree of dryness, oil in water or water in oil preparation is chosen for combination skin type moisturizer.

  • Alpha hydroxy acid is helpful by doing peeling action on active acne lesions and reducing hyperpigmentation caused by acne scars.

Conclusion:

Skin is a very delicate and sensitive organ of the body, and it requires proper care and protection from harmful substances. Acne-prone skin requires more attention and care. It is always advisable to consult a professional health care provider to get proper treatment for acne and other skin-related problems.
