Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

After injuring my left knee while riding my horse, I have been experiencing issues with my left knee for several years. While riding, my horse suddenly turned to the right, and I had to put all my weight on my left leg to stay in the saddle. I felt a pop, and my knee has been bothering me since. I have seen several doctors since then and even had taken an MRI. They said nothing was wrong four years ago, and my knee was fine. However, I still have pain and swelling in my knee, particularly during the summer months when I ride a lot more. I frequently experience bruising and swelling, ranging from a dull ache to excruciating agony. I am not on any medications, but I take tablet Advil when the pain becomes unbearable. I realized it is nearly impossible to tell from this explanation alone, but I would like to know what you thought it could be.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. I believe an MRI (Magnetic resonance imaging) is a good investigation for any ligament issue based on what you have described. A "pop" in the knee and swelling and persistent pain point to either an ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) (a torn anterior cruciate ligament in the knee) or a meniscal injury (a common injury in which forceful twisting causes certain tissue in the knee to tear). You have not mentioned any giving way sensations in the knee, nor have you mentioned whether your knee ever gets locked (gets stuck in a given position) or whether you have pain at a given point in the knee. Finally, I would like to know if you experience these symptoms when you engage in any physical activity other than riding. Please respond to these inquiries, and I would appreciate it if you could attach the MRI reports for better assessment.
